Cynergy PDL/Nd:YAG Multiplex Laser

Skin lesions that are present at birth or soon thereafter would be regarded as birthmarks.  They can be brown/tan pigmented -containing melanin, or red/pink vascular - containing blood vessels.  Treatment of these birthmarks depends on the type of lesion.  Most of these lesions can be treated with the Multiplex laser.  This laser technique is revolutionary in that it enables the sequential emission of two wavelengths from the same delivery system - a high-powered pulse dye laser, and a 1064 long-pulse Nd:Yag laser.

Benefits

  • Reduction of haemangiomas
  • Reduction of mature and blebbed port wine stains
  • Reduction of vascular malformations
  • Beneficial for the reduction of treatment of spider veins, rosacea and leg veins

Alternatives

  • Gemini laser
  • Revlite laser

How Does it Work?

This laser has two wavelengths - a high-powered pulse dye laser, and a 1064nm long-pulse Nd:Yag laser.  Both wavelengths are ideal for treating vascular-related lesions.  The pulse dye laser is the "gold standard" for targeting vascular lesions such as port wine stains, as well as smaller blood vessels, etc.  Likewise, the Nd:Yag laser is particularly effective at treating larger facial and leg veins.  The sub-purpuric pulse-dye laser converts oxy-haemoglobin to methaemoglobin and micro-clots, increasing absorption of the Nd:Yag wavelength by 300 - 500%, thus enabling reduced Nd:Yag fluence for enhanced patient safety.  In addition, since greater penetration depth is achieved, results are optimized.

Am I a Candidate?

The Cynergy is safe for all skin colours and types.

Expectations

Removal or reduction of birthmarks.

Safety and Side-Effects

Protective goggles are worn during this procedure to reduce any risk of eye damage from the laser.  The laser-exposed sites may be swollen, painful, itchy and may blister or ooze fluid.  The discomfort is usually mild and fades over a few minutes to several days.  There is a very small risk of infection wherever the skin is wounded, which is why you must clean and care for the treated areas as directed.  Where there is no infection and pinkness is avoided, the risk of scarring from this laser is low.  Other risks include white spots, which are usually infrequent and short-lived, but which can be permanent.  There could be possible loss of tanning ability in the treated area.  Occasionally brown-gray areas may occur at the sites of the laser exposure, particularly if you expose yourself to sunlight while it is healing.  These occur rarely but can be unsightly and can last for months to a year or so.

Recovery Time

In some cases there may be blistering and bruising which can last for up to a week.

Does it Hurt?

The Cynergy laser has a cold air handpiece connected to it which minimizes pain, and topical anaesthetic is used if necessary.

Before Treatment Instructions
