Stretch marks (striae) are the result of over-stretched skin.

What Causes Stretch Marks?

It is suggested that stretch marks result from the breakdown of elastin and collagen in the skin.   Pregnancy, weight gain and hormone changes are the leading causes of stretch marks.

Areas of Occurrence:

Stretch marks usually occur in areas involving the breast, abdomen, thighs, groins and buttocks.    They are initially red or purple, but, as time progress, often turn white.

Treatment of Stretch Marks

The results of many past treatments have been unrewarding, but new laser technologies are available to treat stretch marks through stimulation of new collagen.   We treat stretch marks with a combination of Fraxel laser, as this stimulates collagen deeply.  The red/purple stretch marks can be treated with our pulse dye laser (Cynergy).

Does Laser Treatment Hurt?

Topical anaesthesia is normally not required.  The experience of a laser pulse is like feeling the stab of a rubberband against the skin.  Topical anaesthesia can be provided if necessary.

Will the Results be Seen?

The results are variable and are dependent on the extent of the stretch mark.

Number of Treatments Required?

A test spot area is always performed for stretch marks and, if successful, then one would normally expect a progressively good outcome following further treatments.

What Happens Following LaserTreatment?

The skin in the treated area may be red for a couple of weeks.

Who is a Good Candidate for Treatment of Stretch Marks?

Usually the best response would be achieved in those patients with fair complexion and light pigmentation.
